Last Saturday night I wore wet-look skinny jeans, a sequined top, stiletto melissas (complete with red love heart toes) oh, and glittery eye make up. Totally inappropriate for a night in with friends and curry take-away I know but hey! I don’t get out much and I only had to travel from my wardrobe to the kitchen rather than brave sub zero Scottish weather conditions, so make the most of it I say.
Our guests looked gorgeous and I have to say a little more appropriately casual than I felt, in various jeans and layered top combos, a subtle bead or sequin here and there. At the girls end of the table the conversation inevitably veered towards fashion & clothes versus the other “C” word, Comfort! Although girls just want to have fun with fashion there’s a strong pull towards the baggy, the easy, the verging on the elasticated.
The most frequent request from clients during my private styling consultations is, “I want to feel comfortable,” there’s often a preconception that style equals being pulled tight and stuffed into a garment like a sausage about to burst at the seams. Not true! Style and fashion can be as easy and effortless as you like. It’s simply a matter of making choices which work for you, dress according to your body shape, in clothes which fit. Choose colours which light you up & I’m a huge fan of interesting accessories. Today I’ve teamed the aforementioned wet-look skinny jeans, (high waisted to conceal the muffin top, with a doze of lycra for the all important comfort factor), with chunky ribbed socks, hiking boots a couple of contrasting layers, including a mushroom-print polo neck, a very stylish puffa jacket, plus purple knit gloves and a fake fur deer stalker, a purchase from a men,s store in Covent Garden circa 1989. Yes, this time I was braving the arctic Scottish conditions and I hasten to add felt very comfortable and I’d like to say rather stylish.
